King of Pop Night (Top 13)

The judges are announced by the announcer dude rather than Ryan…a timesaver perhaps?  They have to squeeze in a 13th contestant, plus Kara’s yapping, so the two hours will be chock full!

The big discovery of the last two days is someone forgot to heed my reminder last week of the need to purchase 1-866-436-5713.  DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER.  It is porn.  Unless of course you are into that.  Then fire away.

The kids are singing Michael Jackson tonight.  It is hard to remember before the freakshow of a person that is left today, but he actually used to be pretty hip and cool, huh?  And he had an entire nose, rather than the half of one he has now.

But enough of me blabbing.  Onto the music!

01. Lil Rounds

rounds

big “The Way You Make Me Feel” – Ken Warwick is desperately trying to dispel the rumor that the first contestant to sing will go home.  Lil takes the dead-man’s spot tonight and gives a pretty rocking performance.  She has a thing for changing up the lyrics to suit her needs, she was wearing a hot outfit, and her vocal performance was solid.  I have no complaints, but wasn’t ecstatic, either.
02. Scott Macintyre

macintyre

Rating:half+1/2 “Keep The Faith” – This was exactly what I expect from Scott.  He chose a song that he can pull off, arranged the piano to enhance it, and delivered it with conviction.  That said, his voice is really not the best, and I wonder how long the commodity will last.  I do think he has a loyal fanbase, but I also see him getting old and boring quickly.
03. Danny Gokey

gokey

big “PYT (Pretty Young Thing)” – Personally I am not a fan of this song, but his performance was very energetic.  His voice did fall off a bit when he was intensely concentrating on the dance moves.  And at least he admits he has a few things to learn about dancing.  I wasn’t banging cymbals like the judges were, but this should keep him safe.
04. Michael Sarver

sarver

straight+1/2 “You Are Not Alone” – I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by Michael tonight.  The song was a little boring, but he did what he could with it. He was on pitch.  But not jumping off the couch.
05. Jasmine Murray

murray

big “I’ll Be There” – I think Simon’s comment about being robotic was right on.  She had no emotional connection to the audience or to the song.  That comes along with being young.  That said, it was a decent vocal.  Plus I like the song.  And I like that she chose a Jackson 5 song because she is young.
06. Kris Allen

allen

Rating:half “Remember The Time” – His energy with the guitar steps it up a notch, but I didn’t find the song exciting.  He already played his Michael Jackson card in the semis, so maybe he was singing his second choice. The vocals were a bit flat.  I like the Jason Mraz vibe.  Plus he has a cute wife, who looked pissed when Simon said he should have kept her hidden for a few weeks!
07. Allison Iraheta

iraheta

big “Give In to Me” – I love her vibe, I love that she is young but has a seasoned way about her, even if her stage banter is more awkward than Archuleta.  She seems fun, she can sing, and she stands out.  Her vocals were pretty great, too, despite a few bum notes.
08. Anoop Desai

desai

half+1/2 “Beat It” – Paula said it was Karaoke, but honestly, that is what Anoop is.  I see him more as an entertainer than a real vocal artist.  That is why they put him through, so it should come as no shock.  The vocals were average, but his energy on stage is amazing.  His fan base should pull him through.
09. Jorge Nunez

nunez

half “Never Can Say Goodbye” – There were parts that were decent, and notes that were off.  He is a bit long-winded with his stage banter.  I didn’t hate it as much as the judges, but it was not the highlight of the night.
10. Megan Corkrey

corkrey

half “Rockin’ Robin” – I will probably say the same thing about her every week until she goes, but knack for song choice and personal style is right on, and she uses that to compensate for her weak vocals.  That said, her vocals are painfully weak, and I don’t know how long she can ride the wave of “quirkyness.”
11. Adam Lambert

lambert

Rating:half “Black or White” – Am I hearing the same performance as the judges?  His voice is grating.  GRATING. And honestly, there were parts that were grossly off-key. Maybe he comes off amazing in person, but on tv it sounds manic, spastic, and just plain bad.  I don’t know, but I completely disagree with the judges.  His stage presence is amazing, but I would expect that from a prefessional actor.
12. Matt Giraud

giraud

big+1/2 “Human Nature” – What can I say, I really enjoyed it.  I think he has a knack for picking the right songs, too.  I enjoy his style at the piano much more than Scott, but that is just me.
13. Alexis Grace

grace

big+1/2 “Dirty Diana” – I thought it was fantastic.  The judges are a little crazy tonight.  I was impressed–she has a lot of personality, and I think she is coming into her own.  Nice work, Alexis! (remember, she is 1-866-436-5736)

Just a note that they got rid of the mosh pit, and replaced it with a platform where they project the contestants’ faces.  I don’t know which is worse.

Paula was actually hard on people tonight!  Go Paula–way to become relevant again!

Ryan promises that they are going to change up the competition this year.  I do not like the prospects of this, because I think the judges will be able to override the elimination.  It is like the electoral college, and I am not a fan of this checks and balances for the people’s vote.

Since two are being eliminated tomorrow, I think it might be Kris, Megan, and Jasmine in the bottom 3.  Michael Sarver may have pulled out enough tricks to survive this week.  What did you think?

I’m with you all the way. Although I did like Adam more than you did. I think he’s just a great entertainer. I think he needs to be the front man for a band. Although I don’t think he’ll win this competition because he doesn’t have the broad appeal of some of the other contestants. But I think you nailed the bottom three.

  • http://americanidolsuckedmein.blogspot.com Ian

I think Kris and Jasmine are going home. Jasmine’s had three chances to wow America and failed. I don’t think Kris has the fanbase to last, even though I thought he did well.

  • ryanflip

I pretty much agree with your bottom 3 assessment. Although, I would personally throw Anoop or Jorge in there as a surprise close 4th, 3rd or out. Anoop is probably safe, due to as you said, his fan base, despite the fact that I thought only Megan was worse than him tonight. My guess for who’s going home tho, would be Jasmine and Megan, maybe Kris (not sure, since he is good looking, the tweeny vote might pull him through a week).

As for your thoughts on the performances, most were spot on, I think, except for Adam’s. I wasn’t wetting myself like the judges, but i did think it was alot better than you did, if for no other reason, the amazing stage presence. The vocals, tho I personally wouldn’t call them GRATING, were annoying at points, but overall, good.

  • ryanflip

and i forgot to mention, and I’m writing this well before the results show, but does anyone think VFTW is still relevant? They have picked Megan as the one to vote for, if she goes on instead of anybody, I won’t watch this show again this season.

Ok, maybe I will, but it will be annoying.

  • Stacey

FINALLY SOMEONE IS SEEING THE SAME THING I AM! ADAM WAS SCREAMING INTO THE MICROPHONE and what the heck are the judges watching? Apparently not the same show I am.
I wish they would have given Alexis the credit she desrved….great performance. Dirty Diana song is a song that has to be oversung…anyone remember the MJ video?

  • Nichole

I agree with you completely! Adam Lambert made my ears bleed and then I was shocked when the judges liked him but dumped on Alexis Grace.

  • J

I agree, Adam Lambert is just over the top (not in a good way). He screeches! It didn’t really seem fair that Matt and Alexis didn’t get much feedback. How do they know what they need to improve on…

  • Kammy

I thought Alexis came off as a wannabe rock chick which will hurt her in the long run because Allison is way more authentic. Adam is my favourite contestant but I didn’t like his performance either. Overall an ok night. Nobody was awful.

  • dave

Simon was right two weeks ago when he said Adam is a contestant you’ll either love or hate. I don’t think he’s going to win the competition b/c he doesn’t really have his own style, he can just perform the heck out of anything he sings. That being said, he has the potential as a lead singer of a great rock band to sell platinum records. I would absolutely pay to watch him perform.

  • warden

Adam is a one trick pony. Once everyone has heard him act like a rockstar for a few weeks, people will ask “is that all he can do?”. Then the gay pics will begin to surface and show up on the cover of tabloids and the 45 year old women who lust after Jon Bon Jovi and David Lee Roth will throw up a little in their mouths and never vote for him again.

Many of you have totally missed the mark on Kris Allen. His fan base is large, and his appeal is wide. He will be in the top 5.

I agree that the judges are missing something with Alexis. She has more market potential than anyone in the running.

    Here are my predictions:

    Bottom 5 Anoop Desai
    Bottom 5 Jasmine Murray
    Bottom 5 Jorge Nunez
    Bottom 5 Michael Sarver
    Bottom 5 Scott Macintyre
    Middle 3 Allison Iraheta
    Middle 3 Lil Rounds
    Middle 3 Megan Corkrey
    Top 5 Adam Lambert
    Top 5 Alexis Grace
    Top 5 Danny Gokey
    Top 5 Kris Allen
    Top 5 Matt Giraud

    We’l see how it goes……..

  • Amanda

I agree about Adam — it’s the same, yelling, screeching vocals everytime! I want to see something different from him. The same goes for Allison (or maybe it’s her goofy banter that throws me off).

    Jorge — sweet but boring…

Anoop is suave — but I recalled turning and telling my husband, “He reminds me of a lounge singer!”

Despite what the judges said, Megan is starting to grow on me — I really enjoyed her “Rockin’ Robin” last night!

Danny is my fave right now! And I like Matt, too — he reminds me of Billy Joel.

    Love your site! Yea!

  • Gretchen

Hey – warden – I hope you’re right about Kris. I like him – fresh-faced and sincere! I hope his fan base responds!

  • Amanda V

Hey, So I’m going to 99% agree with Warden on this one.. love the line up he’s got goin on, however, I would put Allison in the top five and Adam in the Middle three :) .

I just love Matt, his style is perfect, totally contemporary, picks greats songs… basically, love him.
I also really like Kris, he’s got that Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson thing goin on and I love that style of music. As of now I want them in the Top 2

Hum, oh and about Megan, she is quirky…true… and I didnt like her much in the beginning, but i keep hearing this sound in her voice, and it intrigues me. I think she needs more training/experience, because she could be truly great in the industry right now.

Well, I really like your site, i’ll keep checkin up on it.
