Disco Fever (Top 7 Redux)

Disco Fever is making the rounds at Idol.  Tonight they are skipping the video clips in lieu of more judges feedback time and trying to come in under the 1 hour mark.  With all of this “extra” time I would love a bonus medley of Ryan singing Macho Man. Come on, it would be hilarious, right?

01. Lil Rounds

rounds

half “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Kahn – It was decent, yet predictable. She did what she could with it, and had a very entertaining performance. That said, Simon was right in predicting it is her final week.  The Dead Man’s Spot rarely lies, after all.
02. Kris Allen

teeth “She Works Hard For The Money” by Donna Summer – Loved it, Loved it, Loved it from note one!  Brilliant–that is all I can say.  Great vocals, great arrangement.  Kris, FTW!
03. Danny Gokey

gokey

big “September” by Earth Wind and Fire – This was pretty decent from him!  Much better than the last few weeks, ans while it was nothing like what Kris did, it was solid.
04. Allison Iraheta

iraheta

big+1/2 “Hot Stuff” by Donna Summer – I loved the arrangement, I loved the rocker ensemble, and her vocal is incredible as always.  I liked how she started a little slower while sitting on the steps, and then stepped it up.  I just hope there is an upcoming week that lets her show off more of her rocker side.
05. Adam Lambert

lambert

big+1/2 “If I Can’t Have You” by The BeeGees – Nice vocal, though I was again distracted this week by Screamy McScreamerson on a few of those high notes. But asside from those two notes, a fabulous vocal. And I always love to see a “Pool of Abdul,” as Ryan so poetically put it.
06. Matt Giraud

Rating:big “Stayin’ Alive” by The BeeGees – I liked the arrangement and the beat going on.  The vocal stylings weren’t nearly as amazing as the last four performances, and I fear he may be in trouble this week, yet again.  It is not that he had bad vocals, and in fact they were his best vocals in weeks.  But I wish he would have changed something up a little more.  He needs some guidance from his BFF Kris.
07. Anoop Desai

desai

big “Dim All The Lights” by Donna Summer – Asside from the last note where his voice cracked,  it was pretty good, but not great.  His new look is exciting, and being in the pimp spot, I wonder if he will evade his inevidable elimination.

Well, if there was only one elimination it would be Lil, for sure.   She has everything working against her, including the judges, and the singing order. The second person in trouble is not quite as clear cut and will come down to Anoop and MattAnoop had the pimp spot, so traditionally this would count him as safe.  But Matt has the momentum of the judges save. Both had decent-but-not-great performances, so it will be a toss-up.

Sorry to all the Adam fans, but Kris was the best of the night for me.  I loved everything about his performance.  Adam and Allison tie for second with Danny at a close third.  I would say the top four have clearly revealed themselves tonight.

What mare your thoughts?

I thought Adam was best and then equally good were Danny, Kris and Allison. Matt as next and then Anoop and finally Lil.

This is a solid group but if you look at Adam’s body of work I think he is clearly the front-runner and the most exciting performer. He brings it week after week with a level of brilliance that has not been exceeded on this show in any year.

I agree that Kris was the best of the night. I actually thought Matt’s performance was second-best, with Allison and Adam following. I wasn’t impressed with Danny. I didn’t hear or see anything original about what he did. He sang it well, but we all know he can sing by this point. It’s time for him to show us something new.

Now I REALLY don’t get it anymore. What is the competition about? Singing or changing up the songs? Why do they judges talk about changing up the songs all the time? Some songs work only as they were written and it’s almost a sin to change them. And what does changing of a song up has to do with showing you can really sing well and ENTERTAIN?
And what’s with the Lil-bashing all the time? She sang it well (the start wasn’t that hot, but the rest of the song was pretty good), they say she is a great singer, and then go on with their “I don’t know what kind of artist you are”-mambo-jambo. I mean REALLY, can it BE (Chandler mode) any more obvious they just look for an excuse to bash her? WHY???
I didn’t really like what Kris did. He sang it well, the arrangement is interesting, though it put me down because I expected disco all night long. The only “new” thing about his performance is the arrangement – his voice is the same (it’s great), but there is nothing of the “new” stuff the judges demand from other contestants (such as Lil).
Danny was great – tonight I liked the uptempo stuff more. Though nothing new on his front either.
And Alison – she is becoming the most predictable for me. Have we seen anything but rock from her? I mean I LOVE her, I always forget her age with her mature voice, but she sings every song the same way, her riffs are the same and it’s always rock… for me, that’s not a bad thing, but again – seeing as how the judges always demand that the songs are changed up (what she did) and that the contestants bring something new vocally (what she did not), I really don’t understand all the praise for her performance.
Adam remains the most unpredictable contestant, because with him you REALLY don’t know what to expect, except the high notes, which I love. But he bored me tonight.
Matt on the other hand was blazing hot. I love how he changed the song (the only studio recording from this year I have on my iPod is Part Time Lover) almost to blues, love the vocal, love the look. He was just great.
And Anoop… I love him, but he was pretty boring, too. And as for the voice cracking at the end – well, that happens.

Anway, I kinda think tomorrow night it will be Lil and Anoop…
And again, I love all of these 7, but with all the judge-bashing, Lil will go, but I think she’ll make it after the show (if they’re fair and give her a real chance). I just hope she doesn’t flip out on them (what would be understandable, I really think they were way too unfair to her). And Anoop… as much as I love him, he’s the weakest of the guys… but then again, they’re all so damn good… gosh.

    Anyway, Archuleta tomorrow!!! :D :D:D

I felt Allison oversang it – forced it to be a rocker song. Plus she did not seem in sync with the timing of the song.

Adam bored me tonight… I guess it just tells me that I could not sit through an entire Adam concert – been there, seen that kind of thing.

Danny oversang his in parts. But I believe he worked VERY HARD on preparing for that song. (Randy even mentioned that in his comments) AND I still think he is adorable so I pretty much give him a pass.

Kris was enjoyable. I did not mind the he changed it up. But I SO agree with Miljan’s comments above that there is too much emphasis on being original and not enough focus on the actual singing talent.

Unless you have had a lot of experience reinventing yourself (like Adam) then how can one be expected to do that week after week. A lot of these kids have not had a stage career.

Maybe they should rename this to “America’s Got Performing Talent.”

    Just my two cents.

  • Miljan

Or “America’s got changing up songs talent” :D
I totally forgot about that what you said – but I’m the audience, not a judge – the judges seem to forget that most of these kids have almost never sang publicly, let alone had to compete in front of a 30-million-audience, and that they just can’t BE stars yet… they gotta give them a break.
But still, what puzzles me the most is the Lil-bashing after all the time of pimping her…
