Ryan tapes on his facial hair (Top 7)

The kids are singing songs of the 21st Century.  But before we get to the real performances we get some performance night filler!

I liked this little ditty from the voted off idols.  Except Paul should just not have his mic turned on, because the girls sounded great and Paul?  well he just totally ruined it.

1. Scotty McCreery

+1/2

“Swinging” by Leann Rimes – So this is the first week I actually can say that I wasn’t annoyed at the Scotty vocal.  I wouldn’t say I loved it, but at least it was more exciting than last week.  I didn’t enjoy that he overcompensated with the eyebrows and mic holding.  I also felt like he was finally called out by the judges.  Although IDK what their answer would be to their judging last week i.e. Randy going from “If it ain’t broke don’t even think about fixing it” to “At this point you need to step it up.”  If I was a contestant I would be confused.

2. James Durbin

+1/2

“Uprising” by Muse – Ok, I get the vision, I love the artistry, and I give him total credit for this.  Marching band and all!  However, I just don’t think he pulled the vocal off. He wasn’t way off or anything, but I’ll say this – he is no Lambert.

3.Haley Reinhart

“Rolling in the Deep” by Adele – Um, can I start chanting?  Ha-Ley! Ha-Ley! Ha-Ley!  I know, I know.  But wasn’t she good?  I agree that I was a little concerned during the first phrase – she was a little bit timid at first – but she brought it in the middle, and she had those backup singers clapping, and her vocal was pretty amazing overall. Go underdog!

4. Jacob Lusk

“Dance With My Father” by Luther Vandross – It is never good to miff the words on the first line.  I did not love this at all.  I don’t love the song to begin with, and the crazy needs to be reigned in.  I 100% disagree with Randy – dude does not need to let loose – dude needs a strait jacket.  For the good of America, please don’t allow the crazy to get out.  Blah.

5. Casey Abrams

+1/2

“Harder to Breathe” by Maroon 5 – Casey went in for the Kill with JLo!  I actually loved Casey singing this song.  He showed his guitar chops, his vocal was actually very good, and he kept the crazy faces in check.  I approve, buddy.  I approve.

6. Stefano Langone

“Closer” by Ne-Yo  - Well, I can’t deal with the crotch thrusting or the random red suspenders.  The vocal was ok, but the visual was not anything to write home about.

7. Lauren Alaina

“Born to Fly” by Sara Evans – This was a cute song choice for her!  It didn’t do enough to showcase her voice, but she sang it really well.  And I don’t understand what she is talking about not being able to hit crazy notes, because she totally has!  Bring up that confidence, Lauren.  You can do it!

Best Tonight: Casey!  Followed by the ladies, where I would probably place Haley a hair above Lauren.

Worst tonight?  For me it was Jacob.  I also did not love Stefano.  I wonder how Scotty will do with his combo of dead man’s spot + judges criticism.  I’m guessing he will be just fine.

Overall I didn’t love love anyone (notice the lack of any performance receiving a “smiley with teeth” rating above.)  So it is very true that it is really anyone’s game at this point. Each of these people need to Bring. The. Awesome. next week.

I’m not kidding, final 7.  Bring it or go home.  Except Scotty.  If you don’t bring it, you probably won’t go home.

So….thoughts from you guys?  Who do you love?  Who do you hate?

Scotty seems to be untouchable doesn’t he. Don’t get me wrong I like him, but this was not his best performance. I like the judges, was disappointed he took a John Anderson song, and passed it off as a Lee Ann Rimes song. Not only did he use John’s lyrics, he pretty much used his tempo. However Scotty’s version was a rather poor imitation of the real thing. It’s really the first time I have down graded him. He is still one of my favorites. And yes how do they tell him week after week if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and now this week tell him they wanted something different. Very confusing.

Haley has raw talent that seems to go under appreciated and under the radar by the idol voters. I have voted for her for the past 4 weeks. I was voting for Jacob earlier. I have liked her from the beginning, but really took notice after Bennie and the Jets She nailed this song, and dare I say I enjoyed it better than the original. But bottom line the under 20 female crowd isn’t going to appreciate talent like this. If they can make Kesha millions of dollars what does that say for their ability to spot talent. Haley was easily my favorite performance tonight.

Jacob- still love his voice, and the emotion he puts into his stuff. Wasn’t technically perfect, but as we found out there was a bit of a glitch tonight in the equipment,< He worked through it and I gotta say did a great job.

James- I was just uninspired by this. The vocals at times were not very good. HE has legions of fans so he is safe. The judges over praise him, and I do sense there is a hint of a judges agenda here. They want him to go as far as he can for rating purposes. My least favorite tonight

Stefano- What more can I say, this kid is great. I wish America would think so as well. Dare I say he has the most natural vocal talents of any of the males remaining. I even like how he keeps learning each week, and his stage presence gets better. My second favorite performance tonight.

Casey- It's a love or hate thing with him. One week I hate him, and the next week I like him. I still maintain he should have been voted off when he was voted off. This week he redeemed himself for me, last week I was convinced he was going home when they voted Paul off. Again there are judges agenda involving him so he will get over praised, but I did like his performance tonight

Lauren- I have said this all year, she needs to work harder, and at times I feel she isn't competing. She tried to brush off her less than adequate performance tonight as she is not confident enough to hit the notes, so she doesn't really push herself. Lauren this is a singing contest, show us or go home. You can't rely on just the judges believing you can do it, prove it. She sure didn't make Sara Evans blush tonight, I'll tell you that. Tonight was the first night I feel the judges were semi critical of her. They had given her a free pass each week, when many of those weeks I felt she was bottom 3 worthy. She is bottom 3 worthy tonight, but she apparently has all the southern people voting for her so I doubt she will be in any real danger. I personally would have voted her off weeks and weeks ago.

“Swingin’, by Leann Rimes??” That’s like writing, “My Way, by Patti Austin”; “Stairway to Heaven, by Dolly Parton”; “Over the Rainbow, by Barbra Streisand”; “Pretty Woman, by Van Halen”…. you get the idea. “Swingin’” is by the great John Anderson. Leann Rimes merely covered it (inadequately).

As for your reviews, I agree about Casey kicking ass, but I disagree about Jacob. Well, partially. I thought he sang well tonight, but I do think he sings best when he is reigning it in, so I think Randy is crazy to say that he should let it completely loose.

@ grey74&hellip : you need to remember that Scotty was more or less required to label it a LeAnn Rimes song. The theme for the top seven show was “Songs from the 21st Century” and clearly, the original from 1983 wouldn’t qualify for that. LeAnn’s 2010 version does however.

My favorites this week were Haley and Casey by far, because theirs were the only songs I was actually interested to buy. I really like James Durbin, but this week for the first time I noticed that he lacks the last 10 percent in his voice (or his ability to show it) – you weren’t far off when you said that he’s no Lambert.

jabob and casey were equally dreadful . i was disappointed in james ithe portrayal [costume[ was to nazi-like but he is very talented who is muse anyway????>? i hate the way the judges try to push casey admit it you screwed up by saving him.at the expense of the rest of the good talent.. when casey trolled up to the judges table he reminded me of a peeping tom.
