Hello Idol Fans! I am coming out of hibernation to post my thoughts on this lovely show and all of of its horrors and/or wonders (but probably mostly horrors). I am recovering from this nasty flu that has been going around, so I apologize as posting my be a bit behind this week.
So my thoughts on the new panel? Well I wasn’t very pumped about it. At. All. I am not a Nicki Minaj fan, I don’t know much about Keith Urban, and I was actually hoping Randy would finally be booted! I was pretty pumped about Mariah because I have liked her input when she was guest mentor in the past. But I was trying to keep an open mind. After watching the first episode I will say that it wasn’t quite as horrible as I was expecting. Of course, this is all edited, so it remains to be seen if the live show trainwreck has yet to come.
But this is show is about the contestants. (I think.) So let me go over some highlights from audition night #1.
TENNA TORRESYou’ve Got a Friend by Carole King Camp Mariah Alumni, Tenna, auditioned with a Carole King classic. And although she was given praise from the panel, I thought it was way overdone. The vocal gymnastics were a bit much for my taste. She does have an ok voice but she needs a bit of guidance and experience to know when less is more. |
Christina “Isabelle”Summertime by George Gershwin First of all, why is “Isabelle” in quotations? I get that it is a fake last name, and I would have understood that if it wasn’t in quotations. Anyway, I do like her voice but it needs a bit of refinement. The performance was a bit forceful, and she didn’t take her time the way that song needs. |
Shira GavrielovValerie by Amy Winehouse Shira is apparently already an Israeli star, and came to America to fulfill her dreams. While I liked her song choice, she needs to work on her pronunciation. |
Frankie FordSweet Dreams by The Eurythmics Clearly alliterative names scream superstar (not that I’m speaking from experience or anything.) he got a little nervous and started in too high of a key. But he pulled a Brooke White and stopped and started over and recovered nicely. His vocal stylings were ok, but I see him having potential with some coaching and guidance. He sees like a hard worker and determined. He could get far in Hollywood Week. |
Sarah RestuccioMama’s Song by Carrie Underwood So she started off singing Mama’s Song by Carrie Underwood, and it seemed off. Like maybe she switched keys part of the way through, or maybe she waasn’t on point with the melody. Not sure. But then Randy asked for a second song and she busted out some Nicki Minaj rap, and wasn’t half bad. So she is a country rapper. Also, I thought it was refreshing that *most* of the judging panel thought it was ok that she didn’t quite know who she was as an artist yet. I think that is ok at this stage of the game, although she needs to make a concerted effort to find out who she wants to be. |
Angela MillerMama Knows Best by Jessie J She was one of my favorites of the night – she had excellent tone and vocal control. She also alluded to the fact that she had performance experience. |
Gurpreet Singh SarinSunday Morning by Maroon 5 The “Turbinator” apparently has over 40 different turbins to color coordinate with his outfits. Is this like when I matched my scrunchies and socks in fourth grade? His voice was ok, but he needs some vocal lessons. Maybe he will get some help from the idol coaches? |
Ashlee FelicianoPut Your Records On by Corrine Bailey Rae Ms. Ashlee gets the award for best performance of the night. She had an interesting and notable voice. The performance was strong, and her family was cute. |
