Sudden Death: Ladies Part 2

On the second night of lady sudden death, the competition was fierce! In comparison to last week where the eliminations were pretty clear-cut, I was shocked to see so much talent go home.  Here’s how it went down…

1. Melinda Ademi

melindaNobody’s Perfect by Jessie J

Meh, I really want to like her, but I don’t think she has a great voice.  She has the stage presence of a good entertainer, though.  Her main issue?  Following a superior performance of the same song from last week – it really pales in comparison.

2. Candice Glover

O.M.G. Love. This. Girl. I declare her winner.  I cannot WAIT to see what else she performs this season.  Looking forward to everyone else getting schooled with her master class in singing.

3. JULIANA Chahayed

julianaSkyscraper by Demi Lovato

She’s super cute, she plays guitar, and she has some potential.  Her timidness in delivery is made up for by her endearing innocence.  However, it will be a challenge to compete with the bombastica that will inevitably come along with this show.  She could make the cut tonight depending on everyone else’s performance.

RATING:big

4. Jett Hermano

jettOnly Girl by Rihanna

Loved the arrangement, loved her at the piano, but there was something just not quite right about the performance.  Maybe she was trying too hard?  I didn’t believe her–like her heart wasn’t in it.  I see her as a student of the show–making all the right moves and studying the best strategies, but just not feeling the performance or connecting with the audience.

5. Cristabel Clack

cristabelNo One by Alicia Keys

I like this girl a lot and was really looking forward to her performance in this round, however, this performance was way overdone in terms of vocal gymnastics.  I know she can sing the big runs, but vocal restraint is a beautiful thing, too.

6. AubRey Cleland

She is a good vocalist, she looks great, but there is nothing notable about her.  I will forget her in 15 minutes.  To me, there is nothing that stands out.

7. Rachel Hale

rachelNothing But The Water by Grace Potter and the Noctournals

Wow, great song choice and pretty great performance.  I have to be honest, I wasn’t expecting too much from her, but color me pleasantly surprised.  Good vocals and stage presence. Go Rachel!

8. Breanna STEER

She is a great vocalist and looks hot.  I am glad that Nicki associated her with Aubrey because they are the same thing.  And if this was X Factor, those two and two others would get put in a group and be a better version of Fifth Harmony.  But alas, this is Idol, land of individual singers.  And unfortunately, there is a short cast list and doubling up is usually detrimental to both.  Will there be room for both?

9. Janelle Arthur

janelleJust A Kiss by Lady Antebellum

This song forced her to push her voice too hard because the melody of the song has zero range and is boring.  This song is about the harmonies, not the melody – it was a bad pick for an Idol solo.  I was looking forward to her, but I honestly didn’t like anything about this performance.  This could be trouble because everyone is bringing it tonight

10. Zoanette Johnson

zonetteCircle of Life by Elton John

OMG the hair!  OMG the Voice!  That entire performance was cray to the cray.  Completely insane, off the hook, etc etc.  Yet, I can’t hate this at all.  And I have no idea why!  I usually hate this but I am honestly intrigued.  The vocal was big and gospel-y, yet actually in key.  And her big wide vibrato is her signature style.  And the lisp!  I want to hate it because it is so nuts, but inside I sort of loved the whole thing.  OMG.

Overall this night was the best of this round so far.  The talent was insane, and the results are as follows:

Zoanette, Breanna, Aubrey, Candice, and Janelle are going through to the next round.  Several comments (obviously).

  • Rachel was considerably better than Janelle tonight, but I understand why they kept Janelle–she probably has more commercial potential and has been better throughout the audition process.  But I’m glad for Rachel that she had her time to shine.
  • I can’t believe they kept both Aubrey and Breanna.  They are both good, and one is not better than the other, but they are going to cancel each other out.  They have the same fan base, the same style, and will sing the same songs.
  • Cristabel and Jett were probably both better than their performances.  Unfortunately, a sub-par performance was enough to get the boot with the talent tonight.
  • Little Juliana needs to come back next year.  Or go on X Factor.  She has some potential but is so young.
  • Zoanette.  ZOMG.  I have no words.  Get ready for the Cray Cray, America!
  • I hope Candice wins.  Master.  Effing. Class.

Also, can I just say how much I love Nicki Minaj as an Idol judge? I agree with her like 95% of the time. She gives honest and sane feedback, is critical when necessary, and does not mind handing out praise when deserved. I thought I would hate her, but looks like I suck at pre-judging the judges! Nicki, you and I can hang out any day and talk Idol, little lady bug.

Let me know what you think! Are you happy with the results?

American Idol judges are prejudice!! They picked all the African Americans with no talent?? and sent home very talented people? why are they allowed to be judges? they need to get new FAIR judges!!
